About Richard Bienvenu
I live in New Orleans, Louisiana three block from the Mississippi in the same house I grew up in. Although I was born and raised here I’ve made my home in other places. Mobile, Alabama; Los Angeles, CA; Sevilla, Spain; Seattle, Onalaska and Vancouver, WA where I spent sixteen years. In 2003 I moved back to New Orleans and realized this is the only place that ever really felt like home.
Education
My bachelor’s degree was in Communications Arts with a concentration in film production at Spring Hill College, a small Jesuit insitution in Mobile, AL. For a couple years I worked for a industrial fim company in Mobile before I was accepted to the film school at the University of Southern California (USC). While there I won several awards for film work including second place in the Chicago Film Festival.
Spain and Washington State
I got an opportunity to move to Spain and became a teacher of English as a second language (ESL) at a small American college in Sevilla, one of the best decisions I ever made. I fell in love with Spain, its people and language and lived there for a year before returning to the states. Later I moved to Washington State to get some experience living out on the land.
In Washington I owned 65 acres and we built an alternative energy house of photovoltaics and hydropower that was displayed as a model home in the Real Goods Catalogue. We raised chickens, ducks, turkeys, cattle, sheep, goats and had a huge vegetable garden. We were mostly self-sufficient.
When the relationship ended we sold the house and I moved to Vancouver near Portland, OR. I started teaching business ESL at a language company in Portland whose main clients were executives from Mercedes Benz (then Daimler Chrysler).
Music Projects
During that time I produced two CDs of my music one being Tone Poems, all original solo piano music, and Awaken the Dream, a voice and guitar project with my then singing partner. Both of these are available for digital download. I also then began my first forays into Internet marketing.
Back Home
Now back in New Orleans I perform about once a month at the Neutral Ground Coffee House and had my first classical singing debut at the 13 annual Bach Around the Clock festival in March 2009.
Recently I started a blog about life in my beloved city — notesonneworleans.net — and I also maintain a site for ESL teachers –englishteachinginfo.com.
